How to Make Jeevamrit and Other Natural Farming Bio-Formulations
The success of natural farming depends on mastering a few key bio-formulations. These preparations—made entirely from locally available materials—replace synthetic fertilizers and pesticides while building long-term soil health.
Jeevamrit: The Foundation of Natural Farming
Jeevamrit is a fermented microbial culture that dramatically increases beneficial microbial activity, improves nutrient availability, and attracts earthworms.
Ingredients
- 200 liters of water
- 10 kg fresh local cow dung (within 24 hours)
- 5-10 liters cow urine
- 2 kg jaggery (brown sugar)
- 2 kg pulse flour (gram flour/besan)
- One handful of soil from farm bund
Preparation Steps
- Fill barrel with 200 liters of water (rainwater or well water preferred)
- Add 10 kg fresh cow dung—ideally from indigenous breeds
- Pour in 5-10 liters cow urine
- Add 2 kg jaggery (food for beneficial bacteria)
- Mix in 2 kg pulse flour
- Add a handful of farm soil (inoculates with local microbes)
- Stir thoroughly, moving in one direction for 2-3 minutes
- Cover loosely with jute bag or cloth
- Leave in shade for 48 hours, stirring once or twice daily
Ready when you see frothy surface and smell distinct fermented odor.
Application
| Year | Pre-Sowing | Per Irrigation |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | 400 L/acre | 400 L/acre |
| Year 2+ | 200 L/acre | 200 L/acre |
Foliar spray: Dilute to 10% (1 part Jeevamrit : 9 parts water)
Important: Use within 12 days of preparation.

Essential Tips
Storage
- Use earthen pots or plastic containers—avoid metal
- Keep in shade at all times
- Use wooden or plastic implements for stirring
Sourcing Materials
- Indigenous cow breeds produce dung/urine with higher microbial content
- Use freshest materials possible
- Jaggery should be unrefined
Cautions
- Don't apply under direct hot sun—apply evening or early morning
- Never mix with chemical fertilizers or pesticides
- Ensure well water is not contaminated with chemicals
Mastering these bio-formulations provides all essential inputs for successful natural farming.
